Periodontal is a term used by dental specialists who treat diseases of the gums and the gum tissues along with the area around the teeth. Periodontal issues have harmful effects in the long term and need to be treated as soon as possible so as to ensure controlled recovery and freedom from further recurrences. Periodontal treatments are the most essential requirement of any teeth or mouth ailment caused by plaque.

Dr. Kezian and staff have many years experience in dental heath and provide a variety of treatment options for it.
What Are The Symptoms Of Periodontal Infections?

  • Periodontal Health1Bad breath, gingivitis
  • Gum irritation, swelling or redness
  • Easily bruised or bleeding gums after brushing
  • Itch, aches and uneasy gums
  • Deformation of teeth and gums
  • Increased space between teeth and molars
  • Difficult chewing with increased tooth sensitivity

The main cause of periodontal issues usually stem from poor oral hygiene. However, Dr. Kezian has many treatments available.
What Are Periodontal Treatments?

  • The treatment for early gingivitis is to floss daily, brush twice daily and rinse with a good mouthwash. The dentist gives advice on how to brush, floss and the best mouthwashes to use.
  • More invasive treatments are required for upper level infection.
  • If the infection has spread too far into the pockets around the teeth, it is removed by doing a scaling and root planning. A local anesthetic is required for this procedure as much more than deep cleaning is used.
  • Should the infection go further into the bone, one of the periodontal treatments that can be used is flap surgery. This is where the gums of the patients are retracted to remove the infection. The diseased part of the root is removed and soft tissue grafts augments gums.
  • In extreme cases dentists go for bone surgery to reshape the bone near the infected tooth to make it harder for bacteria to grow again.

Gum disease refers to a group of inflammatory diseases that affect the gum tissues. In case of any gum disease, a dentist should be seen immediately. This is because the gums can be a precursor of several diseases.
The gum diseases can be avoided by maintaining good oral hygiene through;

  • Periodontal Health1 (1)Brushing the teeth at least three times a day.
  • Flossing all the teeth at least once in a day.
  • Thoroughly rinsing the mouth with a variation of antiseptic mouth rinse for about thirty seconds. This kills the bacteria that cause the gum disease and even reverses early Gingivitis problems.Dr. Kezian provides a wide range of gum disease treatment to his patients.

 Non-Surgical Gum Disease TreatmentsMost gum treatment options do not require surgery. They include;

  • Scaling and Root Planning. These get rid of plaque and tartar from the periodontal pockets. They also work to smooth out the root of the tooth.
  • Professional Dental Cleaning. This is usually a simple form of reversing gum disease by just having a simple cleaning to fight off the germs.

Surgical Gum TreatmentIn some cases, the non-invasive approach is not enough to treat the gum disease. Surgery becomes the only alternative. Gum disease treatment surgeries include;

  • Pocket reduction
  • Regenerative procedures
  • Dental crown lengthening
  • Gum graft

The surgical options are the last resort if the gum tissues are too unhealthy to be repaired with non invasive methods.
Dr. Kezian and staff have already brought lasers into the mix as a form of gum disease treatment. They are used in conjunction with a traditional scaling and root planning procedure since they provide additional benefits.
