CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2018 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT!

The Dr. Arthur A. Kezian Science Scholarship is happy to announce the winner of the 2017-2018 scholarship year as Ashleigh Hawk! Ashleigh is the recipient of a $1,200 scholarship award given to a high school or college student who has demonstrated academic merit, community service, and financial need. This scholarship is awarded to a distinguished science major to help them achieve their educational goals and encourage them along the way. https://www.drkezian.com/los-angeles-dentist-blog/a-great-science-scholarship-opportunity/

After graduating as valedictorian from Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, GA, Ashleigh is now pursuing a double degree in Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Her interests in this field involve studying autoimmune diseases as well as regenerative medicine. Ashleigh hopes that furthering her education will one day help her to develop a method for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases so that she can improve the lives of millions of people. Her goal is to attend and complete medical school and become a surgeon.

Ashleigh credits her passion for science and education to her mother and other important women in her life. Growing up in a single-parent household, her mother instilled a deep value for education and the doors that it can open. Having some of the important people in her life diagnosed with autoimmune diseases, Asheligh’s interest piqued in biomedical science and engineering so that she could make a difference in something that has affected those who she cares about.

Her interest in helping others doesn’t stop there. Ashleigh is an active member of her community and believes in helping others to achieve their goals. Growing up in a low-income area, her neighbourhood was rife with gang-related crime and violence. During high-school, Ashleigh tutored other students at a “head start program”. Currently, she volunteers her time at the Clarkson Community Garden, which grows vegetables for low-income families and refugees. She understands the need for healthy food options and how difficult it can be to thrive in all aspects of your life if you are not adequately nourished. She also previously worked with Meals on Wheels.

At Emory, Ashleigh was president of the group Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), which helps to educate and guide peers into making good choices on a daily basis. She led a suicide prevention campaign and organized events to discourage distracted driving and illegal drug use.

Now, with the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship, Ashleigh is able to focus on the things that are really important to her, and not have to worry about the financials. She is aware of the impact that this scholarship can have on her studies; she states:

“I am extremely honored and grateful that I have been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian Science Scholarship! This investment in my future greatly alleviates the stress of covering my academic expenses and allows me to focus on my courses and volunteer efforts as well as other extracurricular activities. Thank you to Dr. Kezian and staff!”

Dr. Kezian is proud that Ashleigh is the recipient of this year’s Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship. As a student, Dr. Kezian was a recipient of a $500 scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Calouste Gulbenkian Undergraduate Studies Scholarship (https://gulbenkian.pt/en/grant/undergraduate-studies-scholarship/) is awarded to a person of Armenian origin from less developed countries to obtain higher education at University. Dr. Kezian was extremely grateful for the opportunity that the scholarship provided him and vowed that when he was in a position to do so, he would give back. Dr. Kezian understands the financial burden that most students face from his own studies, so he created the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship to help with the monetary side of things so that they can focus on their studies.

“I have been a student majoring in science myself and know how competitive the field is. By presenting students with a scholarship opportunity, I can help them understand the importance of individual accomplishment when it comes to reaching their objectives, assist them financially, and teach them about the significance of higher education.”

Dr. Arthur A. Kezain is now a Doctor of Dental Surgery in Los Angeles and is a specialist in cosmetic dentistry. He is a well-known and trusted dental surgeon, and puts as much pride into his work as he does for helping to improve the lives of students with this scholarship. He thanks those who applied for this scholarship and wishes them success in their future goals. Dr. Kezian encourages students to continue to follow their dreams and to apply again for next year’s scholarship.
